St Augustine of Hippo
This original icon was painted for historic St Augustine of Hippo Episcopal Church in Galveston Texas. St Augustine, one of the great Church Fathers of the fourth century, is the author of the oft quoted phrases "love the sinner, hate the sin", and “our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee”. He was a man of color, and St Augustine’s Church in Galveston, established in 1876, was the first church in the diocese of Texas founded by and for African American congregants.
In this icon, St Augustine stands on Galveston Island, holding the church in his hand. |
