Our Lady of Tikhvin
This icon is a copy of one of the most famous Russian miracle-working icons. According to legend, it is one of three icons painted by the hand of Luke the Evangelist, and it miraculously left Constantinople and reappeared in Russia in 1383.
The original was in the Tikhvin Monastery for centuries until 1941, when the area was occupied by the Nazis. It was taken to western Europe, then to the United States, where it spent 55 years before it was returned to the Tikhvin Monastery in Russia.
The iconography of Our Lady of Tikhvin is close to the Byzantine type of Hodegetria. The gesture of Christ is its most spectacular characteristic, with the right hand in blessing over the hand of the Virgin.
